Updated position paper and submission writing kit – 2011 Bill

We have updated our position paper and submission writing kit to assist others in making submissions to the Senate Committee inquiry into the Family Law Legislation Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measures) Bill 2011. Submissions are due on 29 April 2011.

The position paper includes information about the Bill as well as some of our suggestions for how the Bill could be improved to better protect women and children from family violence in the family law system. The submission writing kit includes some background about the inquiry and how to engage, as well as a template letter that can be used in developing your own submission.

Both updates are based on the papers that we released in December 2010 to assist individuals and organisations engage in the consultation on the Exposure Draft Bill. They reflect the differences between the Exposure Draft Bill and the Bill that was introduced into Parliament on 24 March 2011.

Sample email to Shadow Ministers encouraging them to support the Bill

This sample email, was sent to the Shadow Ministry to encourage them to support the Bill. It may give you an idea of some of the things you might include, but try to adapt the email to include your own stories and ideas. When writing to politicians, it is generally more effective to write your own email or letter rather than using a template.

Consultation on draft Family Law Amendment (Family Violence) Bill

At the end of 2010, the Attorney-General’s Department released the Family Law Amendment (Family Violence) Bill 2010 Exposure Draft for consultation.

While the proposed changes are an important first step to better protecting the safety of women and children in the family law system, more changes are necessary to ensure the family law system does not jeopardise the safety of women and children.

Women’s Legal Services Australia also put together a position paper and submission writing kit to assist other organisations with their submissions. These have now been updated.
